Answers to frequently asked questions about AyaNovaWhich network database server should I use with AyaNova?Stand-alone, network and remote access configurations

We provide three options for accessing the AyaNova database while out of the office - using the AyaNova Data Portal and/or using the optional add-on WBI (web browser interface), and/or the optional MBI (mobile browser interface)

All remote access options available for use with AyaNova provide access to live data.

No more wondering if you have the latest information and no more having to run back to the office to upload your billable information - as everything you entered is viewable by those in the office immediately, as is what is entered by the office is immediately viewable by you out on the road.

 AyaNova Data Portal

Figure  1

What the remote user sees and uses:

With the Data Portal, remote users run the exact same full AyaNova program just as those within the local area network.

The only difference is instead of connecting directly to the database server, the remote users connect to the Data Portal which than connects to the database server. This difference in connection is via the AyaNova.exe.config configuration file on the remote users computer as per the Data Portal configuration steps.

Although the Data Portal has been optimized for use with slower connection speeds,  how fast the response is to retrieve data (i.e. printing a report, opening a workorder entry screen, filtering a grid, etc) will be affected by the connection speed between the remote user and the Data Portal.

What is set up:

The diagram example above (figure 1) shows the Data Portal setup on a separate computer than the database - but you can set it up on the same computer where the networked AyaNova database server is.

Follow the instructions in the AyaNova v3 Manual for requirements, installing and configuring the Data Portal using Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS)

And as outlined in the same AyaNova v3 Manual section for installing and configuring the Data Portal, the remote user would have the same AyaNova program files as a local networked computer would have. The only difference is the remote user would use an AyaNova.exe.config configuration file connecting to the Data Portal instead of directly to the

The purpose of the Data Portal is security and relative speed over a slow connection while still being able to use the full AyaNova program:

The Data Portal can be placed outside a network’s firewall so that the corporate database server is not exposed to the Internet;

The Data Portal uses IIS's security when placed within the local network;

And the Data Portal has been specifically optimized for the slower connection speed of a remote user.

WBI (optional add-on web browser interface)

Figure 2

What the remote user sees and uses:

The remote user enters the connection URL in their web browser that is connected to the Internet, to  bring up the WBI login page for your AyaNova database.

When a user enters the URL to your WBI server in their web browser and logs in, they are accessing the "pages" WBI provides to obtain access to your database.

Brief outline of features can be found on the WBI (Web Browser Interface) page with details on use in the WBI Online Help

What is setup:

The diagram example above (figure 2) shows WBI setup on a separate computer within the same local area network than the database - but you can set it up on the same computer where the networked AyaNova database server is.

Follow the instructions in the WBI Online Help for requirements, installing and configuring the optional add-on WBI (web browser interface) using Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS)

The WBI files and IIS can reside on the same computer where the AyaNova database resides, or on a separate computer - as long as within the same local area network.

The purpose of WBI is security, no files needed for the user and speed:

WBI uses IIS's security;

The remote user does not need any AyaNova program files installed on their computer

WBI has been specifically optimized for the slower Internet connection speeds and is much faster than connection via Data Portal.

MBI (optional add-on mobile browser interface)

MBI is a new AyaNova interface designed to support cell phones, pda's, Blackberries and other wireless devices equipped with a web browser. MBI stands for "Mobile Browser Interface"

This is a web interface designed to meet the needs of small screen devices and users who need fast access to essential information while on the road.  It's designed to be accessed from any modern wireless device that supports the minimal web browser standards as well as regular PC web browsers.

With this interface remote users will be able to quickly check their schedule view and update work orders and schedule markers, view client and vendor details (with phone dial enabled links), read and send memos etc (full features to be determined depending on feedback).  The interface is designed for small size screens with pared down pages to save wireless web access fees.  Users can get to the information they need as quickly as possible without taking time or space for anything that isn't absolutely required.

This is not intended to be a replacement for the much more full featured WBI remote access add-on product which is more appropriate for full fledged PC based web browsing.  MBI is targeted specifically for small screen devices.

Please refer to the MBI web page for details
